Ditch the Dress

So you might just be wondering what on earth did I mix into my brew this morning! But following Solange Knowles’s wedding to video director boyfriend Alan Ferguson where she wore not one but two incredibly elegant bridal jumpsuits, the idea of ditching the traditional bridal dress in favour of a style that is all YOU, is absolutely the right decision.

Solange is a free spirited, creative soul who’s style has been recognised at icon status, so perhaps it is easier to accept her bridal style. But having just tried on a few jumpsuits myself to experiment, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how flattering & sophisticated they looked. A bridal jumpsuit might or might not be your thing, but I guess my message here is that your bridal wardrobe is all about what you feel comfortable & confident in, & really don’t be scared to experiment. Tradition is a lovely thing, but a times are changing or rather have changed, so feel free to mix it up & have fun with creating your bridal style.

So, if you fancy the bridal jumpsuit, then here are my top style tips to rock it:

#1 Heel it up: Jumpsuits & flats just don’t marry well

#2 Watch the fit: A snug fit can cling across the thigh & bottom so you’re looking for a fit that skims over your hips, rather than clings. In terms of the leg fit, I’d recommend a straight leg with a slight flare (avoid 70’s bell bottom look) or a tapered tailored leg. For a slight flared leg ensure the leg length finishes an inch from the bottom of your heel & for tapered, just below your ankle.

#3 Watch the Plunge: Whilst the side boob is trending, I’m not sure you want to be spilling your bosom at the alter! Of course a subtle plunge is flattering and sexy. Avoid covering up too much, high neckline + sleeves, could make for a psychiatric ward look

#4 The detail: High end/ Designer jumpsuits offer the best fabric & fit @ a reasonable price in comparison to the average bridal dress tag but may lack the detail. So what to do? Well as Solange shows, bold red lips and big hair are her answer, but you could add an embellished bridal sash/belt or don bold chandelier earrings

# Hair: I would say the higher the neckline or less exposed = up do, and more skin on show = hair down. But its hard to define a rule for jumpsuits as its quite style dependant, so my advice is to experiment! Get your bridal party around and showcase your jumpsuit with hair down and hair up to get their vote

#5 Glow: A natural even skin tone is key, especially if there is any sort of plunge in your jumpsuit. So this may mean a good exfoliation & spray tan or light self tan. Be careful of going over board with bronzing powder as it will mark the edge of any plunging neckline. If this happened, baby wipes are amazing at removing any make-up!

So I can’t resist, one last photo of Solange in her third bridal outfit, which was a in fact a wedding dress! But with a twist of having a cape as her train, this is one style credit to an amazing modern bride!

A Lavish Affair

If money were no object, could you imagine your wedding dress being made from 35 meters of silk & a 15 foot train? Well for Nell Diamond, the daughter of ex-Barclays boss Bob Diamond, that was very much her dream dress for her wedding held this weekend at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc, South of France.

Designed by Olivier Theyskens, the stunning sweetheart ballgown wedding dress featured an intricate embroidered bead & feather design, Oh! and did I already mention the 15ft train! With a dress to this spec it was rather refreshing to see Nell’s hair, make-up and baby’s breath bouquet kept simple, sophisticated and elegant.

Her bridesmaids (all 8 of them!) wore a floor length one shoulder Grecian style dress in a choice of 2 colours, soft sorbet pinks & a champagne neutral designed by Prabal Gurung. Indeed it is a good call to have designers within your network of friends!

And so with all the almighty weight of her ceremony dress, I was rather relived to see Nell change into a gorgeous one shoulder plisse reception dress, captured whilst cutting her naked wedding cake with floating roses at each tear. Mmmmm…. I wonder if those were real roses or hand moulded sugar paste roses, probably the latter considering the sheer lavishness of this rather delectable wedding! x

Rock the Rain

Ultimate boho bride Ashlee Simpson defied the rain to wed Evan Ross in Greenwich, Connecticut estate this weekend. Now we all know too well how unpredictable the British weather is, so Ashlee’s show of calm is rather refreshing as secretly pressure exists to miraculously tame the weather gods to deliver a perfect blue sky wedding day! Perhaps I’m imagining it but I certainly felt the pressure. I was certain my guests depended on it for a good time. Crazies, I know, so on reflection, rain or no rain, you’re on the path to get married and that in itself is so freaking exciting!!!!

PS. How could I forget the bridal fash! Ashlee rocked the boho bridal style & I love her take on combining this Summer’s crop top & A-line skirt trend into a full lace dress. Accessories were a particular highlight, Grecian style laurel headband, echoed with a similar design seen on her shoes, simplicity is key! I also just had to include her bridesmaids below to highlight how stunning it is to have varied bridesmaid dresses & just with having the same bouquet it really finishes the look xashlee wedding 1

Christina Ricci’s Manhattan Wedding

Gosh this is a week for sharing celebrity weddings- so here is Christina Ricci looking runway ready in her Givenchy wedding dress for her Manhatten City wedding at the Harold Pratt House And Peterson Hall on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

What a unique silk tulle dress with the cut away detail at the shoulders, elbow length sleeves & beautifully embellished with chantilly lace which also featured on her veil.

So what do you brides think, love or loath? x

Kelly Clarkson’s Country Style Tennessee Wedding

kelly clarkson wedding dressCelebrity weddings can often be tainted by the enormity & luxury applied to every aspect. So it was just so lovely to see Kelly Clarkson looking so relaxed & natural at her intimate wedding to Brandon Blackstock at the Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennesse.

The couple got engaged in December 2012, and after a busy year they forewent their original plans & decided to instead elope in an intimate ceremony with just Brandon’s children present.

Kelly wore a stunning Temperley lace gown, together with an ornate crystal head band and chose a beautiful rustic bouquet of delphiniums, daisies and sunflowers.

The venue is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains, and is renowned for its untouched landscape, which makes for the just the perfect backdrop for their wedding photos. Beautiful dress & a beautiful couple very much in love always brightens up my day!

Millie’s countryside wedding, Babington House

Former reality star Millie Mackintosh & Stephen ‘Professor Green’ Manderson have at last said their ‘I do’s’ at the idyllic Babington House estate in Somerset!

Millie’s style has always been very classic & sophisticated, so it is such a delight to see her translate her signature look together with a vintage theme into her wedding day. She looked absolutely radiant in a vintage lace Alice Temperley wedding dress complete with a peplum train & oh! so fab Christian Louboutin peep-toe shoes. She kept her jewelry minimal wearing pretty pearl earrings & bracelet, which showed off her fabulous Grecian style braided updo accessorised with a simple elbow veil.

Millie’s bridesmaids channeled the glamour of the 1920’s by wearing the aptly named ‘Chelsea Dress’ by Ghost , fresh flower crowns, & smaller versions of Millie’s soft vintage rose pink bouquet – gosh such a stunning look!

Oh, and let’s not forget the groomsmen who looked rather dapper wearing deep blue 3 piece suits with an unusual choice of a black tie.

I’m afraid we’ll have to leave our imaginations to the vintage decor of the reception, which if it’s anywhere near the standard of decor I’ve seen at Christmas, then I know it would have been exceptional!

Jessica Ennis ties the knot in Monique Lhuillier

London’s 2012 Olympic sweetheart, Jessica Ennis ditched the sporty lycra to marry her childhood love Andy Hill in a romantic ceremony set in the idyllic Peak District.

Jessica chose the stunning silk organza ruffled  ‘Legacy’ dress by Monique Lhuillier  from her Spring/Summer 2012 Collection. I love the V-neck bodice on this dress with the contrasting textured A-line skirt, paired with her chapel-length veil and a posy of pale pink and cream roses.

Tres Chic in Chanel- Keira says ‘I do’

How refreshing to see actress Keira Knightley wed Klaxon keyboardist James Righton in a low key wedding in the South of France. They both looked totally relaxed & very stylish  indeed! I love that they both wore Ray Bans in the glorious sunshine, it puts a relaxed spin on the day, and Keira looked stunning head to toe in Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld designed her strapless tea-length tulle wedding dress, which she wore with a classic Chanel boucle bolero, ballet pumps & a subtle floral garland – this is Parisian wedding style at it’s finest!keira wedding dress

Our Countryside Wedding

Charissa & Mike radiated every ray of sunlight, love, & effortless countryside cool on their wedding day. myLWB have the pleasure to feature their wedding in Charissa’s own beautiful words:

The Proposal…Mike popped the question over a candle lit breakfast a few days before our sixth anniversary.  I had just come home from the gym and he had put out breakfast pretending that we wouldn’t have time to celebrate on our anniversary due to work.  He then told me mid-way through breakfast that he’d got me something small and I would have to go on a treasure hunt (we do this every birthday and Christmas).  I searched around the room with Mike saying “Hot… cold…”  Getting very hot by our bookshelf I noticed that a few books were out of place and had “I love you” cut out of the titles.  I pulled out the books, by which time Mike was on his knee next to me grinning like a fool.  Behind the books was a small box wrapped in ribbon.  Mike took the box from me, unwrapped it and asked if I would marry him.  Tears were streaming down my face.  Mike says I was in such a state that he had to ask me twice.  He couldn’t make out the first “yes”!

countryside wedding the happy couple

Our Wedding day inspiration….Our main aim for the day was to have fun with our family and friends, everyone closest to us. It was all around fun in the country, everything was very casually put together with a completely relaxed vibe. I went to Flowers for Africa and hand-picked all the flowers that I wanted in my bouquet and on the tables.

lace wedding dress

We spent a whole year collecting glass jars of different shapes and sizes. The week before the wedding we decorated each jar with ribbon and twine. They were filled the day before with the help of friends and family with different size candles and country flowers. It was such a fun way to spend the day before with a whole lot of people helping out.

Our wedding stationer was absolutely divine and totally on the same wave length as us and we could take inspiration from her designs.

On the day….I was just so happy; I could barely stop grinning from the moment I woke up. I also managed to stay totally relaxed for most of the day. The last 15-20mins before we headed into the chapel were a bit stressful and the endless family/bridal part photos were a bit tedious but other than that, we both thought the day was amazing. Everyone there was so special to us and so happy for us, & so happy to finally see us married!wedding couple & bunting

My favourite part…I really did love almost every part of the day. But seeing Mike at the alter was so special and saying our vows, it was the whole reason behind the day and it was so emotional. I must admit though, the entire day from start to finish was amazing. I really didn’t expect it to go so well!

saying i do at the aisle

My advice to myLWB brides to be…Stay calm; accept that not everything will go according to plan. Relax, enjoy the moments with your new partner.

Take into consideration your families’ opinions but do what feels right for you, in the end it is your day and you need to feel comfortable.

James & Lauren’s Bespoke Wedding, Northamptonshire

A bespoke wedding experience that captures the true sense of the couple, their journey & the love they share with each other & their guests, is one that etches a cherished memory for all.

Taking inspiration from their venue, a converted barn, Lauren & James were drawn to a Romantic Rustic theme, which with their personal touch, would make their wedding day truly bespoke.

Having sourced, sewn & printed all of their wedding décor & stationary themselves, it was down to their florist to add the finishing touches. Their vintage jars & bottles on tree stumps were filled with white anemones, sweet avalanche roses and blue tree berries. The same flowers were used in Lauren’s bouquet, with variations for the Bridesmaids and Groomsmen.

Twinkling fairy lights & glowing tea candles adorned the ceremony which Lauren’s sister led & the couple personally wrote together.

In Lauren’s words….

On the day I have to admit I was completely overwhelmed! After spending the majority of the day with the family I hadn’t prepared myself to meet 150 people! However the day went amazingly well thanks to the fantastic staff at our venue. We received so many lovely messages after our big day from our nearest and dearest so we’re pretty sure they enjoyed themselves too!

myLWB: Any advice to other brides/grooms?

Enjoy the planning! It is the most magical time and I loved that we planned every aspect of the wedding together.

Also, on the day make time to see each other. One of my favourite memories of the day was our first dance; we talked non-stop to each other in our own little world for three minutes because we felt like we had so much to catch up on!
